$40,000 TO TACKLE RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE

Cunningham MP Michael Organ has praised Wollongong City Council’s initiative in securing funding under the Federal government’s Living in Harmony Community Grants Scheme.

“The $40,000 grant to provide inter-faith forums to devise strategies to maintain and promote Wollongong as a vibrant and harmonious city is a strong expression of our city’s commitment to promote community harmony, civic participation and pride”, Mr. Organ said.

“At a time of increasing paranoia and distrust, fuelled in part by repressive so-called security-based legislation, it is pleasing to see that Wollongong City Council is prepared to work towards reducing religious intolerance, racial vilification and general disharmony.”

“The ‘Inter-faith Community Harmony Kit’, which will be the major outcome of the grant, will be a major step towards reducing religious intolerance.”

“The ‘Different Faiths One Vision: Harmony’ project should reinforce our strong commitment to multiculturalism, recognising the diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds which are so much a part of Wollongong’s social fabric, and I look forward to participating in this important initiative”, Mr. Organ said.
