M e d i a R e l e a s e THE HON. WARREN SNOWDON MP Federal Member for Lingiari 26th June 2008 HEY! PLAYGROUPS! COOL! Kids and parents in Ngukurr, Numbulwar, Milingimbi and Yuendumu will soon be able to enjoy the singing, games, art and craft of playgroup. Federal Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, today welcomed news that the four Indigenous communities have been approved as sites for federally funded playgroups. “Playgroups provide valuable assistance in improving the health and wellbeing of young children,” said Mr Snowdon. “When they go to a playgroup, kids have fun but they also learn and develop important social and physical skills. Through music, word games and play they learn to interact with other children. “These playgroups will also play an important role in building stronger, more resilient communities. “Parents also benefit by developing support networks and getting information about other associated services.” Mr Snowdon said that the process to select local groups to operate these playgroups would start soon and should be completed in the next few months. “Playgroup operators will be selected on the basis of their capacity to respond to the specific needs of the local community. “It is important that community leaders and local families understand and are comfortable with what these playgroups are all about so the best possible service can be provided,” Mr Snowdon said.
