Robert McClelland MP Federal Member for Barton Shadow Minister for Defence Shadow Minister for Homeland Security

30 March 2005

The Federal Opposition, like all Australians, is deeply saddened by the loss of life and homes suffered by our neighbours in the aftermath of Monday night’s earthquake.

The timing of this natural disaster is particularly merciless as the Boxing Day Tsunami rebuilding task continues.

Two C-130 Hercules transport aircraft carrying medical teams and supplies and the HMAS Kanimbla, including Australian Army engineers, are now on route to Sumatra to assist in this latest emergency. These crews have

literally only just completed their mission in Banda Ache.

We can only imagine how much these hardworking Australians were looking forward to some time of rest and recovery with their families, yet each of them have laid a need for respite aside and turned towards the needs of others.

I record our immense gratitude to these tireless Australian servicemen and women who will now heed the call of our nation’s duty to assist in Sumatra, Nias and Simeulue. Labor also appreciates the sacrifices made by each and every family member back home.

The dedication to duty of these ADF personnel is an example to us all.
