Mon, 18th August 2008 FUELWATCH: SWAN'S LATEST DECEPTION

The Hon Peter Dutton MP Shadow Minister for Finance, Competition Policy and Deregulation

Shadow Minister for Finance, Competition Policy and Deregulation, the Hon Peter Dutton MP, has today slammed Wayne Swan for claiming that FuelWatch will save motorists $10 every time they fill their tank and that the Coalition are siding with big oil.

“Mr Swan’s claims that FuelWatch will save motorists $10 a tank is another part of the Government’s deception. If Mr Swan believes that FuelWatch will save motorists this much, he should show us the evidence.

“Like Mr Rudd’s comments last week, the latest claims by Mr Swan are a joke, and a political stunt. He is again leading Australians to believe that the Rudd Labor Government can reduce petrol prices when he knows that this is simply not true.

“This is just another piece of deception.

“A Senate Inquiry has conducted hearings right across Australia to examine FuelWatch, and the evidence presented shows that FuelWatch will not do anything to reduce petrol prices, and may even make motorists worse off.

“None of the evidence from the Inquiry or from Mr Swan’s departments support his claim.

“The Royal Automobile Association in South Australia for example has said that on their analysis, Adelaide motorists would be $100 per year worse off as a result of FuelWatch removing the troughs in the market.

“The Coalition will support any scheme that reduces the price of petrol for motorists, but the Coalition will not support a scheme such as FuelWatch which is nothing more than a tool to give Mr Rudd political cover.

“The onus is now on the Government to deliver a scheme which will provide cheaper petrol to Australian motorists.”
