Truss Welcomes New Generation National

Darren Chester - today declared as the new Member for Gippsland - will be a great addition to the ranks of a party that is always prepared to put local issues on the national stage.

The Federal Leader of The Nationals, Warren Truss, said he expected that Mr Chester

would have a tremendous impact as a new generation National, and would take the fight

up for Gippsland in Canberra and at home.

“Darren’ s success is a big wake-up call for the Rudd Government,” Mr Truss said.

“ The swing of six percent to The Nationals was the second biggest against a new

government since the Second World War.

“ The biggest swing in that time occurred in Parramatta in 1973 and was widely seen as a

backlash against the emerging incompetence of the Whitlam Government. We all know

where that political experiment ended for Labor, and indeed the national economy as well.

“ The Nationals’ campaign for Gippsland was hard-fought, but highly disciplined. Darren

highlighted local issues, but as if often the case, these issues were often also national in

“ Labor has already admitted that it has given up on cost of living issues, such as

spiralling petrol and grocery prices, and trying to improve the incomes of pensioners and

other needy Australians. Labor intends ramming through an emissions trading scheme that

will leave thousands of workers in the Latrobe Valley in the lurch.

“ Darren will be the sort of Member who won’ t be defeatist and will keep fighting for the

things that he and the electorate believe in. He truly is a local champion who is part of a

national team,” Mr Truss said.
