Compensating coal will undermine emissions reduction - Greens

Hewson backs Greens 2020 target

Any genuine emissions trading scheme will see a transition out of coal-fired electricity and into clean, renewable energy, Senator Christine Milne, Australian Greens climate change spokesperson said today.

“The emissions trading scheme is an opportunity for Australia to transform its economy and to create jobs and investment in clean industries. The countries that take the lead on tackling climate change will reap the benefits of green-collar jobs and new export industries,” Senator Milne said.

“The Energy Supply Association of Australia is wrong, compensating polluters like coal-fired energy generators will only drive up costs for other participants and leaves the government with less money to assist families.”

“For more than 20 years the polluting generators have known that climate change is real and the burning of fossil fuels is the problem. Coal-fired power stations will have to find ways to dramatically reduce their emissions, just like every other industry, or they will have to pay for the cost of their emissions.”

Senator Milne also welcomed Dr John Hewson's comments today that to achieve the necessary cuts of 90% by 2050 we are going to have to aim for at least 40% cuts by 2020.

“Both Professor Garnaut and Dr Hewson are at one with the Greens in calling on the Prime Minister stand up to polluters. They polluted for free in the past, they need to pay their way now. The seriousness of climate change demands that all of us participate to get early action—that is also in the best interest of business.

“The Greens want to see a scheme which dramatically reduces Australia’s emissions implemented as rapidly as possible and we will engage with government constructively and responsibly to pursue that outcome,” Senator Milne said.
