MEDIA RELEASE

Successful Indigenous program funding cut

The Australian Greens today called on the Federal Government to commit funding to the Tangentyere  Council’s Safe Families program.

“On the eve of the first anniversary of the NT Intervention (which in no way should be a cause for  celebration), here is a successful program protecting kids in need, that is having its funding cut by  both the NT and Federal Governments,” said Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert.

The Tangentyere Council Safe Families program primarily focuses on reducing family violence and  preventing children becoming part of the child protection system. They also provide limited  reunification and placements and a strong emphasis on case management. It is staffed only by Aunties  and Uncles from the local indigenous community, with 10 full time Indigenous residential care staff

being employed.

“The Federal Government used to contribute to this vital program, with 50% of Territory and 50%  Federal Government funding under the Family Violence Partnership Program, but now they face  having to lose staff and resources with a lack of funding,” said Senator Siewert.

“While the resources poured into the NT intervention have the potential to turn around lives on  remote communities, more needs to be done to ensure money is spent wisely on the things that  actually make a difference.”

“This program serves as a perfect candidate to receive Intervention funding, and without support  from the Federal Government, this community will lose a successful, effective child protection  program.”

“Current funding levels will cease in less than three weeks. We are calling on the Government to re‐

evaluate some of the wasteful funding being pumped into the NT Intervention, and immediately  guarantee this successful program the vital funding it requires,” she concluded.
