Joint Media Release

29/2008 4 September 2008

The Rudd Government today announced it had resolved a long standing issue of contention between the Australian and ACT Governments since ACT self government in 1989.

The Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner and Minister for Home Affairs Bob Debus attended the lease-signing ceremony to finalise the 150 year lease of Googong Dam to the ACT Government.

Mr Tanner congratulated the ACT Chief Minister, John Stanhope, on negotiating to achieve the lease that gives the ACT Government control over the land and assets at the dam until 2158.

Mr Tanner said it was an excellent example of the Government’s approach to new federalism, where governments work together to resolve issues and overcome longstanding problems between jurisdictions.

"The lease gives the ACT Government certainty over its tenure at the dam. That will allow it to implement new infrastructure projects such as the Murrumbidgee to Googong pipeline to secure the Territory’s future water supply."

Mr Debus said as well as resolving the ownership of Googong Dam, the lease negotiations provided an opportunity to guarantee the water supply to Queanbeyan and to new housing developments planned near Queanbeyan.

"This agreement is a positive, long term outcome for both Canberra and Queanbeyan residents and will ensure that future developments are sustainable and secure."

The Member for Eden-Monaro, Dr Mike Kelly, was also present at the signing and played a key role in ensuring Queanbeyan’s interests were represented.

"This is an historic agreement for the people of Queanbeyan. It will help secure the future water supply for years to come."

"After years of failure to resolve this issue, I am proud to have helped bring the Googong Dam situation to a successful conclusion."
