Senator the Hon George Brandis SC Shadow Attorney-General

The Federal Coalition has welcomed the Privacy Commissioner's release of a consultation paper on a voluntary scheme for the notification of information security breaches, the Shadow Attorney-General, Senator George Brandis said today.

Senator Brandis said that the Coalition has long been strongly supportive of practical measures to combat identity fraud.

''The Coalition understands the importance of maintaining the security of personal information, which is why, in Government, we referred this important matter to the Australian Law Reform Commission. This consultation paper is part of the response to that reference.''

Senator Brandis said the Coalition would consider the draft guidelines carefully to

ensure that the proposals adequately safeguard the interests of individuals.

''Proposals in this area need to be practical, realistic, and must not impose unnecessary additional costs on business. We will review the consultation paper with these factors in mind.''

''I will also be giving careful consideration as to whether aspects of the paper may, ultimately, need to be supplemented by mandatory provisions in legislation.''
