The Hon Bob Baldwin MP

Shadow Minister for Defence Science, Personnel and Assisting Shadow Minister for Defence

4 June 2008

The Shadow Minister for Defence Science, Personnel and Assisting Shadow Minister for Defence, Bob Baldwin MP, has called on the Rudd Labor Government to support an amendment to the proposed legislation aimed at assisting in Defence Personnel.

Mr Baldwin said the Coalition will support both the Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme Bill 2008 and the Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme (Consequential Amendments) Bill 2008 which will be considered in the House today.

“The Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme was announced in the 2007 Budget by the then Minister for Defence, The Hon Brendan Nelson as a measure to assist with retention of Defence Personnel,” said Mr Baldwin.

“These Bills implement an important measure to establish a new scheme to provide financial assistance to members of the Defence Force for the purchase, maintenance and development of their homes.

“It will allow ADF personnel to have access to a more appropriate method of home loan assistance that more appropriately reflects the requirements of ADF service and the current housing market.

“The Coalition strongly supports this measure and supports the scheme commencing on 1 July 2008.”

Mr Baldwin said he would be introducing an amendment aimed at strengthening the protections for the widows and their families of those killed in war-like service.

“If successful, the amendment will maximise the subsidy that applies to the surviving partner, regardless of period of service and I call on the Rudd Labor Government to support this important amendment. …..more

“Minister for Defence Science, Personnel, Warren Snowden has indicated that they will vote down the amendment supporting War Widows.

“If Labor is serious about supporting our Defence Families, then they will support this bill with the amendment.

“These families pay the ultimate price for our nation and in the past year where there have been five deaths in warlike service, it will not be an onerous financial burden on the Government as this measure would amount to less than $30,000 this financial year from a budget of $846m for the scheme.”
