M e d i a R e l e a s e THE HON. WARREN SNOWDON MP Federal Member for Lingiari 29 August 2008 TERRITORRY INDIGENOUS GOVERNANCE WINS AWARD The Traditional Credit Union has been recognised for its outstanding contribution to Indigenous business at the Indigenous Governance Awards. Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon, said the field was highly competitive, and included the Waltja Tjutangku Palyapayi, which supports community development and self-determination for remote Aboriginal communities in central Australia. “The Traditional Credit Union should feel rightly proud of their vision, their innovation, hard work, their leadership and now this win,” said Mr Snowdon. “They are a real success story, begun in Milingimbi, and now offering financial services through 12 branches across the NT.” “The Indigenous Governance Awards celebrate and promote effective Indigenous governance, and highlight strong leadership, good management, effective partnerships and brave, creative thinking. “And I congratulate the Traditional Credit Union on their win.” As part of their prize the Australian Government will assist two staff members to participate in a leadership program in the United States to broaden and develop their business management and governance skills. They have been invited to visit native American communities and meet with a number of key leaders, before attending the 2008 Honoring Nations ceremony, as part of the National Congress of American Indians. “I have no doubt the staff of the Traditional Credit Union will make the most of this opportunity of two-way learning into the start-up, operating and ongoing challenges facing Indigenous business,” said Mr Snowdon. “I also congratulate the Warakurna Artists, just over the border in WA, for taking out the Indigenous Governance Award for Organisations established for less than 10 years, and wish both winners the very best in the future.” Media Contact: Kate Sieper 0488 484 689
