The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) has told today’s Senate Estimates hearing that it is in the process of spending $856,000 over two years for the re-design of its corporate internet website.

It is outrageous that the Education Department is blowing nearly $1 million on a website when Australian schools, TAFEs and universities are crying out for more funding.

DEST told today’s Senate Estimates hearing that the current website is ‘…not a bad site relative to others as it stands…’ but the Department is still blowing a staggering amount of money on an upgrade.

When asked by the Opposition about the cost of the project, a Departmental official said: ‘…we’ve been concerned that we may be running a bit lean’.

The Howard Government has shown it is prepared to spend big dollars on consultants while refusing to adequately fund higher education.
