Coalition announces plan to increase single aged pension by $30 per week

The Federal Coalition’s plan to increase the single aged pension by $30 per week would benefit thousands of elderly people on the North Coast, Federal MP Luke Hartsuyker said today.

The Coalition today released an aged pension policy which calls for an immediate increase in the single rate aged pension from $273 per week to $303.

“A $30 increase in the single rate would see it rise to 66 per cent of the coupled rate, which is what pensioner groups have been calling for,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“There is a genuine need for the increase and needs to happen now. Last year Kevin Rudd promised the Australian people he could address cost of living pressures. Now he is in government he has walked away from that commitment.

“Kevin Rudd must understand that the cost of petrol, the cost of rent and the cost of groceries have all increased on his watch.

“Single aged pensioners deserve compensation for Kevin Rudd’s failure to deliver on his cost of living promises.

“There is no need for another inquiry and we don’t need to see the outcome of another review.

“Australia’s aged pensioners on the single rate deserve an increase and they deserve it now.”

Mr Hartsuyker said the Coalition planned to introduce legislation into the Federal Parliament next week.

“This legislation will provide Parliamentarians with the opportunity to provide single aged pensioners with some immediate financial relief.

“The Coalition handed the Rudd Government a $20 billion surplus. This $30 increase will cost $1.3 billion. It is affordable, it is responsible and it will assist those single older Australians who have contributed so much to our nation.

“I trust the Member for Page Janelle Saffin will support this legislation and deliver additional assistance to pensioners on the North Coast.”
