Julie Collins MP Federal Member for Franklin MEDIA RELEASE

29 July, 2008

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT LISTENING TO SENIORS

The Federal Member for Franklin, Julie Collins, was joined by the Minister for Human Services, Senator Joe Ludwig, in Kingston today to hear from the over 60s at a community forum at the Kingborough Council Chambers.

More than 70 Kingston residents were also able to question four of the Government’s Tasmanian Senators, Carol Brown, Catryna Bilyk, Kerry O’Brien and Helen Polley on everyday issues affecting Australian seniors.

Ms Collins said that “we recognise the financial pressures being faced by many older Australians and are committed to ensuring they are adequately supported in the long-term.”

“It’s a pleasure to have the Minister in Kingston today to hear concerns and ideas from the community.”

Ms Collins said the forum was another example of the Rudd Labor Government’s commitment to speaking directly with local communities about the issues we face.

“I will continue to make sure that local residents get access to the Government and can speak directly to the decision-makers.”
