***** MEDIA RELEASE ***** 3 June 2003

Education Minister Brendan Nelson has given an undertaking to open constructive discussions with Wollongong University on the question of special regional funding in response to a question from Cunningham MP Michael Organ this afternoon.

“Given that the main campus of the University of Wollongong is located in the regional city of Wollongong, 80 kilometres South of Sydney, with regional campuses in the city of Shoalhaven, and Moss Vale on the Southern Highlands, I asked the Minister in Question Time why it is not regarded as a regional institution for the purposes of the additional regional funding announced by the Treasurer in his Budget speech”, Mr. Organ said

“The Minister told the House of Representatives that he will be meeting with Vice Chancellor Professor Gerard Sutton tomorrow, and that he is interested in finding a constructive solution to this issue, which also affects the University of Newcastle.”

“In my view Wollongong University fulfills the requirement for Band 3 funding which would provide a 5% loading under the new Commonwealth Grant Scheme.”

“I welcome the Minister’s assurance, and look forward to a positive outcome to tomorrow’s talks”, Mr. Organ added.
