Mark Latham : Get Your Facts Right

Speaking about youth unemployment in his Budget Reply Speech last Thursday, Mark Latham said:

"In some communities the problem is critical: youth unemployment rates of more than 30 per cent in places like Wollongong, the northern suburbs of Adelaide and Wide Bay in Queensland."

Mark Latham has again failed to do his homework and get the detail right.

It is just plain wrong to say youth unemployment for all these regions is more than 30%.

In fact, in the Wide Bay region, the rate has fallen by almost 10 per cent since 1996 to 18.9 per cent.

Both the general unemployment and youth unemployment rates have fallen substantially under the Howard Government.

Australia’s unemployment rate is 5.6 per cent and has been below six per cent for eight consecutive months. Youth unemployment under Labor was 19.8 per cent in 1992. It is now 12.6 per cent.

The Howard Government has created more than twice as many full-time jobs in the last six months than Labor did in its last six years in office.

This is because of the Government’s strong economic management and workplace reforms.

If Mark Latham is serious about addressing youth unemployment he will scrap his job destroying plans to abolish youth wages and attack casual employment.

If Mark Latham cannot be trusted to do the work and get the detail right how can he and Simon Crean be trusted with the Australian economy?
