A new $3.2 million, state of the art centre for providing temporary care to older people has opened at the Alwyndor Aged Care in Hove, in Adelaide’s south.

The Minister for Ageing, Julie Bishop, and the Member for Boothby, Andrew Southcott, today officially opened the new respite centre, which is owned and operated by the City of Holdfast Bay. The city received a $330,000 grant from the Australian Government through the National Respite for Carers Program towards the building costs.

Ms Bishop said the respite centre was the result of extensive community consultation which convinced Alwyndor’s board to include respite as one of the complex’s mainstream services.

The new 12-bed service will also provide respite care for people with dementia and other challenging behaviours. It is the only stand alone respite centre in South Australia.

“This high quality, purpose built centre will ease the burden for many people in the Holdfast Bay region who are caring for aged relatives or friends,” Ms Bishop said.

“The Australian Government recognises the tremendous job that these carers do, and supports an expansion of respite care in all communities as part of our comprehensive package of reforms to aged care.”

Dr Southcott said he was extremely pleased to witness the opening after having successfully lobbied for funding for the project.

“The City of Holdfast Bay had one of the highest levels of aged population of any metropolitan council in Australia,” Dr Southcott said.

“Many older people who are living at home do need a lot of care, especially those living with dementia.

“Their carers need to have a break every now and again to maintain their own lives and I am sure this new service will be very much appreciated.”

Alwyndor Aged Care provides a range of services including Alwyndor Nursing Home and Alwyndor Hostel, and a community care program.
