John Forrest, The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee, said he supports the Australian Electoral Commission’s national Enrol to Vote Week, which takes place in secondary schools across Australia from 28 July to 3 August.

“Voting really is a privilege,” Mr Forrest said. “But as our lives are all so busy, it is easy to forget to enrol to vote or re-enrol after a move.

“Enrol to Vote Week is an excellent way of not just reminding people to do it, but showing them how to do it correctly,” he said.

Enrol to Vote Week’s primary focus this year is to remind young people that voting is their right, but with that right comes the responsibility of filling out the paperwork correctly.

Mr Forrest said that apart from federal elections being held, there are also state and local council elections, so it is important for people to enrol as soon as they are eligible, so they don’t miss their opportunity to have their say at all levels of government.

With over 1750 secondary schools and colleges participating last year, it is expected that this number will increase this year.

People are able to see if their local schools are participating by visiting the website:
