Michael Organ MP

Greens Member for Cunningham 1 September 2004 Organ digs in for miners Greens federal member for Cunningham, Michael Organ contributed financial and personal support to the Elouera Miner ’s picket today. Speaking at the picket, Michael Organ said; “I gave $50 to the miners strike fund today as a token gesture of my support for their campaign to achieve the same conditions of employment as workers at the Appin Colliery.” “This strike has two causes: the Howard Government and BHP Billiton. The Liberal Party has not lifted a finger to prevent workers from receiving different conditions of employment even when they do the same work as others and even when they work for the same company.” “Also lets not forget that only this year BHP Billiton delivered an Australian record corporate profit of $4.9 Billion, so in anyone ’s language the conglomerates capacity to pay for these entitlements is blindingly obvious.” “I was very disappointed to see that Billiton has also embarked on a trend of casualising its workforce. I understand that the previous 138 full time workers have been reduced to current levels of only 86. “At the end of the day, casual work with patchy conditions of employment for some of the hardest and most dangerous work on the planet is palpably unacceptable, that ’s why I support the miner's picket and why I wish them every success,” Michael Organ said.
