MEDIA RELEASE SENATOR THE HON ROBERT HILL Minister for Defence Leader of the Government in the Senate

Friday, 4 February 2005 021/2005

Defence Minister Robert Hill today visited the area of fire devastation on Eyre Peninsula.

Senator Hill met with the Chair of the West Coast Recovery Committee, Vince Monterola, in Port Lincoln and was briefed on the recovery program.

Senator Hill then travelled out of Port Lincoln to meet with soldiers of 9th Brigade, principally Reservists, who are assisting with the clean-up.

“Although it is not a function that is normally undertaken by the ADF after bushfires, there are unique circumstances in this instance, and the soldiers are obviously pleased to be able to help,” Senator Hill said.

“The work being done by the ADF in the supply and support of camps for the volunteers and in clearing work is very important.

“The soldiers are making a vital contribution, and I am anticipating that as a result of my visit, their engagement will be extended.”
