News Release Hon. Laurie Brereton MP Minister for Transport ♦ Minister for Industrial Relations T74/95 26 September, 1995

John Howard’s announcement that the Coalition will use its numbers in the Senate to block the Government’s airport lease legislation is an act of gross political irresponsibility, the Minister for Transport, Laurie Brereton, said today.

“The move completely disregards Australia’s interests and clearly demonstrates Mr Howard is unfit to ever govern Australia,” Mr Brereton said.

Mr Brereton said that the Government announced the leasing o f the major FAC airports in May 1994 and has since then carried out an intensive process o f consultation and studies in the lead-up to the introduction of the lease legislation into Parliament this Thursday.

“With this blatant action, John Howard is knowingly jeopardising extremely important commercial infrastructure decisions affecting 'all o f Australia’s major airports,” Mr Brereton said.

“His irresponsible action will be a demoralising blow to the prospective investors who have already spent millions o f dollars on developing consortia and preparing their bids for the airports.

“They now face many months o f uncertainty as the legislation will have to be re-introduced for the Parliament’s consideration after the next election.

“John Howard has betrayed his duty towards Australia’s interests with this cheap and cynical move in the name o f peddling snake oil to his constituents in Bennelong.”
