Rudd Labor Government plan to assist all pensioners in Eden-Monaro The Federal Member for Eden-Monaro Dr Mike Kelly and the Rudd Labor Government have announced that the Government will provide immediate assistance to all pensioners, carers, seniors and veterans in Eden-Monaro - providing them with financial help in the lead up to comprehensive reform of the pension system.

Dr Kelly said the Government will provide a lump sum payment of $1,400 to singles and $2,100 to couples on December 8 this year, which will benefit: Age Pensioners; Disability Support Pensioners;

Carer Payment recipients - People who are receiving Carer Allowance will also receive $1,000 for each eligible person being cared for; Wife & Widow B Pensioners; Partner, Widow & Bereavement Allowance; Veterans Affairs Service Pensioners; Veterans Income Support Supplement recipients; Veterans Affairs Gold Card holders eligible for Seniors Concession Allowance; Those of age pension age who receive Parenting Payment, Special Benefit, or

Austudy; and Eligible Self Funded retirees holding a Commonwealth Senior Health Card (CSHC)

The $4.8 billion package builds on the $7.5 billion in support provided in the Government’s first budget, bringing new spending on pensioners, seniors and carers to $12.3 billion.

This is part of the $10.4 billion package to strengthen the national economy and support households during these difficult economic times.

Dr Kelly said; “The Rudd Labor Government has listened to what pensioners have been saying. One of the clear messages I have received is that all pensioners are struggling not just single aged pensioners.

“This will deliver a down-payment for more than 24,879 pensioners, carers and veterans in Eden-Monaro.

These payments will provide support in the nine months between now and when long-term reforms are introduced from the beginning of the next financial year.

“The Government’s $4.8 billion assistance package will provide immediate assistance to all pensioners across Australia in the lead up to the completion of the review and reform of the pension system.

“I have also put in a submission to the pension review highlighting the daily struggle that many of our pensioners in Eden-Monaro are going through.

“The Liberal Party would have only given $30 a week to single aged pensioners whereas the Government is looking after all pensioners in our communities.

The Government will not pit pensioner groups against each other like the Liberal Party has and we will not exclude two million carers, people with a disability and married pensioner couples from this payment ahead of longer term reform.

“This is an immediate help to single pensioners of $1,400 whether they be aged pensioners, veterans, careers or disabled pensioners.

“This is an important first step to ensuring that all of Australia’s 2 million pensioners can get much needed assistance now before the Government delivers further assistance in the next budget, said Dr Kelly.
