Hon Kevin Andrews Minister for Ageing

KA143 /2003 Friday March 28, 2003

FEDERAL Minister for Ageing Kevin Andrews today encouraged rural and regional students interested in studying aged care nursing to apply for the Commonwealth’s Aged Care Nursing Scholarships for the 2004 academic year.

The scholarships, valued at up to $10,000 per annum, will allow students to train at a range of regional universities.

"Aged care providers must also play an important role by encouraging and supporting their staff to apply for aged care nursing scholarships," Mr Andrews said.

"The Government has committed $26.3 million to provide up to 1000 aged care nursing scholarships over four years to help people enter or re-enter the aged care nursing workforce."

"The 2004 scholarships mark the second instalment of this Commonwealth Government initiative, with 200 undergraduate and a range of continuing professional development scholarships available.

"For the 2003 academic year, 100 undergraduate and 114 continuing professional development aged care nursing scholarships have been offered and accepted."

Application packs for undergraduate and continuing professional development scholarships in the 2004 academic year are available from the Royal College of Nursing Australia. For further information telephone (freecall) 1800 11 66 96 or visit their website:
