CHRIS PEARCE MP Federal Member for Aston

Media Release

Knox City Council will receive over $6.5 million of assistance from the Howard Government this financial year for local roads and the provision of other local government services through untied grants, Aston MP Chris Pearce said today.

Mr Pearce welcomed the grants, which represent an increase of almost 15% on last financial year.

“These Local Government Financial Assistance Grants will help Knox City Council to provide the high quality services that our community needs and expects of their local council,” Mr Pearce said.

“These grants are untied. That means that Knox City Council can allocate the funds according to local priorities. Funds are used by councils to provide a range of health, community, recreational, cultural, and environmental services and to provide and maintain vital infrastructure such as roads.”

Mr Pearce said that Victorian councils including Knox City Council would share in over $363 million this financial year, representing over 23 per cent of the national total of financial assistance grants funding.

The first quarterly payment is expected on 16 August 2004.
