New leaders for the national land and water resources audit

The work of the National Land and Water Resources Audit has been extended under the Federal Government’s Natural Heritage Trust and a new leadership team has been appointed.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Warren Truss, and Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Dr David Kemp, today announced Mr Geoff Gorrie as the new chair of the Audit’s Advisory Council and Mr Blair Wood as the Audit’s Executive Director.

“The Audit has played a critical role in undertaking scientific assessments of Australia’s land, water and vegetation resources,” Mr Truss said. “These appointments mark a new phase for the Audit, which will build on the impressive foundations achieved over the past five years.

“I am confident that, under its new leadership, the Audit will provide a rigorous basis for measuring the success of major public investments including the Natural Heritage Trust and the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality over the next five years.

“Having retired last year as a Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Australia, Mr Gorrie brings a wealth of experience to the Audit and is cognisant of the importance of good data in sustainably managing Australia’s natural resources.

“Mr Wood has been Director of Regional Land-use Planning and Director of Resource Assessment in the Northern Territory and has extensive experience in natural resource management including the work of the Audit.”

Dr Kemp said the Audit Advisory Council has been further strengthened with the recent appointment of representatives from each States and Territory and Commonwealth agencies such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and ANZLIC — the Spatial Information Council.

“Building a strong partnership with the States and Territories is key to the future success of the Audit,” Dr Kemp said.

“Mr Gorrie and Mr Wood will be an effective team to implement the work of the Audit and we wish them well in the task.

“We would also like to thank their predecessors, Dr Roy Green and Mr Colin Creighton, for their hard work and valuable contributions to sustaining Australia’s natural resources.”
