Tue, 12th August 2008 LABOR COPY CAT FAILING AUSTRALIAN SPORT

The Hon Pat Farmer MP Shadow Minister for Youth and Sport

"The latest round of successful women’s sports leadership grants are welcomed by the Coalition, but it is a con for Labor to claim they are addressing an under representation of women in sport without adding one extra cent" said Shadow Sports Minister Pat Farmer.

"Earlier this year Kate Ellis issued a paper stating ‘women have been sidelined and marginalised in Australian sport for too long’1, yet the Minister is dressing up a successful Coalition programme as her own and without adding one extra dollar of funding claiming to be addressing this issue" said Mr Farmer.

"The Coalition put in place the Sports Leadership Grants for Women in 2002, and we were very proud to have supported around 15,500 women in sport in our time with over $2 million worth of funding" said Mr Farmer.

"Labor’s announcement is just the continuation of the Coalition’s programme. Labor are conning the Australian people, and it is disappointing that Kate Ellis barely bothered to change her press release, which shows Ms Ellis’ lack of commitment to her ‘new direction’" he said.

"This just demonstrates the Rudd Government and is all spin and no substance" said Mr Farmer.
