MESSAGE OF GOODWILL TO ALL AUSTRALIAN TROOPS OVERSEAS

On behalf of Federal Labor I want to extend the warmest best wishes to all Australian troops, Protective Service and Federal Police officers stationed overseas this Christmas.

Right now there are more than 2,000 service personnel deployed on more than 10 different operations including Iraq, Solomon Islands, Afghanistan, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea.

We hope and pray that these special Australians stay safe during their deployment and will be reunited with their family and friends in 2005.

Christmas is a special time when we traditionally come together as a community and reflect upon how lucky we are to live in a tolerant and peaceful nation.

It is therefore very important to think about those communities around the world who do not share this blessing of peace.

Knowing that our service men and women are each day working to bring about peace is something of which Australians can all be very proud. That they are working toward this goal during Christmas, while away from their loved ones, is something for which we are enormously grateful.

I heartily encourage fellow Australians to send their season’s goodwill to our service men and women stationed abroad via the designated Defence contacts messagestothetroops@defence.gov.au or the free-fax 1800 643 938.
