Media Release Senator Helen Polley Labor Senator for Tasmania

Senator Helen Polley today congratulated the Tasmanians who have been selected to represent Australia at the Olympics starting in Beijing on Friday, and the Paralympics which start afterwards.

“Representing your country is always something that you should be proud of, and to do so at an Olympics would be even more special. The Olympics are one of the biggest sporting events on Earth and will be the focus of the world’s attention for the next two weeks. For Tasmanians to be making their presence felt on such a high profile stage is an outstanding effort.

“Given our size it is a fantastic achievement by not only the athletes themselves but also all the people who support them in their efforts. I am sure that they will all consider the sacrifices they have made worth it. Tasmania certainly does better than it should considering we are a state of only 500,000 people, and that is down to the hard work of our athletes.

“I would particularly like to congratulate those who have represented Australia at multiple Games. This is a tremendous achievement.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish them all the best. I am sure will be a fantastic experience for all of them and they can rest assured that all of us in Tasmania will be cheering them on.”
