Greens Member for Cunningham

***** MEDIA RELEASE ***** 29 January 2004

Cunningham MP Michael Organ has welcomed news that the development application affecting Kings Theatre at Thirroul has been withdrawn.

“Diane Beamer, the Minister Assisting the Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, has informed me that the Heritage Office is proceeding with the assessment of the property to determine whether it should be listed on the State Heritage Register”, Mr. Organ said.

“In her letter Minister Beamer says that Kings seems to represent a substantially intact example of a series of theatres designed by the architects Kaberry and Chard, and that it appears to retain its original external configuration and much of its 1920s cinema interior style.”

“I welcome her recognition that the theatre and shops are a prominent element in the Thirroul commercial area and her assurance that she will consider making a further stop work order under the Heritage Act if current circumstances change.”

“I congratulate the community members who have been active in bringing the heritage values of the former Kings Theatre to the notice of relevant authorities”, Mr. Organ said
