Today I am announcing $193,600 in funding to Scouts Australia towards a new Institute for Leadership Training.

From its base, initially in Brisbane, but later in Sydney, the Scouts Australia Institute of Training will operate on a national basis, and will also provide support to scouting organisations in other Asian Pacific countries.

The Institute will provide training for up to 2,000 school students and up to 1,200 volunteers in programs including Certificate II and Certificate III in Leadership Support; Certificate IV and Diploma of Leadership; and training programs based on Certificate IV in Assessment. Leaders from other youth and community organisations will also be able to be trained under this initiative.

It is expected that courses across Australia will commence over the next few months, with the New South Wales courses already underway.

The Institute of Leadership Training will also receive $200,000 over four years from the Macquarie Bank Foundation to support its activities throughout Australia.

Scouts Australia has been operating in Australia since 1968. It boasts 70,000 Scout members and adult leaders. There are more than 13,000 Scouts and 4,000 adult leaders in New South Wales.

In 1994, Scouts Australia became a Registered Training Organisation meaning young Australians who complete their leadership courses with the Scouts receive a vocational qualification which gives them an important head-start for their future careers and provides them with valuable leadership and employability skills.

The Government is working to ensuring that every young Australian has the skills they need to make a successful transition from school, to further education and to work.
