Senator the Hon David Johnston Shadow Minister for Defence I Senator for Western Australia Media Release FULL DISCLOSURE ON INTELLIGENCE LEAK The fact that a journalist is writing a newspaper article quoting material from sensitive classified briefing papers intended for the Minister for Defence should be of concern to the Rudd Government. Canberra Times journalist Philip Dorling wrote an article in June about the Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO) based on briefing papers which are believed to offer an in-depth insight by the DIO on the details of intelligence priorities, the structure and the resourcing of the top secret Defence Intelligence Organisation. Shadow Defence Minister David Johnston said the office of the Minister for Defence should be the most secure office in the land. He said the integrity of security within Australia’s defence intelligence agencies appears to also have been compromised. “That these confidential papers could find their way out of either the Minister’s office or the DIO and into the public domain requires an assurance, at the very least, from Mr Fitzgibbon that a detailed and formal investigation is underway,” Senator Johnston said. Senator Johnston said he didn’t expect the Minister to talk publicly about the specifics of any investigation but said once it was finalised it was important any findings were made public. “A full disclosure into this scandalous breach of our national security should be made as soon as possible - it is the only way to restore public confidence to security concerns surrounding the Minister’s office,” Senator Johnston said.
