Greens Member for Cunningham

***** MEDIA RELEASE ***** 23 June 2004

The Illawarra Area Health Service needs to be on its toes to fire off an expression of interest for one of the twenty new MRI machines which Health Minister Tony Abbott says will be declared eligible for Medicare funding, Cunningham MP Michael Organ said today.

“It’s very disappointing that yesterday’s NSW State budget failed to provide operational funding for the machine”, Mr. Organ said today.

“But there’s still a chance that proposed guidelines being developed by an advisory committee in the Federal Health Department will open the door for the Health Service to lodge an expression of interest for Medicare funding, which Minister Abbott told me in parliament yesterday would be called for shortly.”

“I’ve been lobbying the Federal government to provide this funding for almost a year, and having got this far the onus is now on the Illawarra Area Health Service to make sure they have a water-tight case ready to go the moment those expressions of interest are called”, Mr. Organ said.
