I am pleased to announce that the Australian Government will provide six new Endeavour Malaysia Awards, and four new Endeavour Malaysia Research Fellowshipsin a scholarship package worth $1.5 million (RM 4.4 million) over three years, as a positive step towards strengthening education ties between Australia and Malaysia.

I announced the Awards during my visit today to the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Dr Abdullah Badawi suggested that I explore collaboration opportunities with this university during his recent Australian visit.

Australia and Malaysia have enjoyed a long history of shared education. Over 250,000 Malaysians have graduated from Australian universities. Education will form the basis of our future economic, cultural and social relationships.

The ten new Endeavour Malaysia Awards and Research Fellowships, to commence in 2006, will be worth up to $50,000 each and will be awarded to five Malaysian and five Australian students.

Importantly, two of these awards will be reserved for Malaysian students of the IIUM to study in Australia, and two for Australians to study at the IIUM.

The Awards will be offered to scholars of the highest academic merit whose study and research programmes will enhance relationships between Australia and Malaysia, and foster Australia’s ongoing understanding of Islamic culture.

The Endeavour Malaysia Awards are additions to the Endeavour Awards Programmewhich promotes international social and economic understanding through establishing ongoing links with Australian universities and their overseas counterparts.

Australian students can undertake study and research in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North and Latin America, and students from those regions are offered the same opportunities in Australia.

I look forward to working more closely with our Malaysian neighbours in the cultural and academic exchange of knowledge to further enhance our long term bilateral relationship.
