Michael Organ MP

Greens Member for Cunningham

***** MEDIA RELEASE ***** 21 May 2003

Cunningham MP Michael Organ MP is urging the federal government to rethink its higher education proposals, ahead of tomorrow’s student protest against university fee increases.

“The changes announced in the federal Budget will lock people out of university study. Increases in university fees mean people of the Illawarra will be denied the opportunity of a university education. The Howard government is denying people educational opportunities, a basic right of all Australians”, Mr Organ said.

“Rather than properly funding the higher education sector, this government is forcing more of the costs of study onto students and their families. Those lucky enough to get into university will leave with a mountain of debt.”

“The University of Wollongong has been locked out of regional university funding announced by the government, putting it in the difficult position of having to fund basic infrastructure and salary increases without additional public money”.

“Making further funding increases dependent on putting university staff on individual contracts is a recipe for conflict on campus. It is the action of a government driven by ideology, rather than the needs of ordinary Australians”, Mr Organ concluded.
