JOINT STATEMENT BY THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION THE HON SIMON CREAN MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT KELVIN THOMSON MP

GIVE POINT NEPEAN TO THE VICTORIAN PEOPLE

Point Nepean must become a National Park for the benefit of all the people of Victoria, and not be sold off to the highest bidder for the exclusive use of an elite few.

The controversy over the future of Point Nepean could be eliminated by one simple action. John Howard must intervene and give the surplus Defence land to the Victorian Government. If Labor were the national government this is the course of action we would follow.

This will allow one single National Park to be created, rather than a variety of differing parks with differing rules and owners. It will forever remove the threat of inappropriate commercial development.

The Victorian Government has indicated that it is happy to bear the cost of appropriate restoration of the heritage buildings on the site.

The Point Nepean site is already a community asset. It should remain that way for all time.

Now that Point Nepean is no longer needed by Defence it must be returned to the community, so that it can be used and enjoyed by everyone - not locked up as an elite retreat for the very wealthy.
