TOWNSVILLE CITY COUNCIL AND PORT AUTHORITY DISCUSS BETTER CITIES FUNDING FOR TOWNSVILLE WITH BRIAN HOWE

The Federal Minister for Housing and Regional Development, Brian Howe, met today with the Townsville City Council and the Port Authority to discuss Better Cities funding for Townsville's Inner City and Port Strategy.

At Mr Howe’s briefing he discussed the importance of local involvement in the consultation process for what will be nearly a million dollars spent over the next three years. ' .

"Because there are Important infrastructure Implications for the whole of Townsville I want not just Local Government and the Port Authority Involved in consultations,! but other stake holders including local business and community groups," Mr Howo said.

"Transport access to the Port has been identified as a major constraint to the further development of Townsville as a major sea port.

"We also need to look at relocation of the access corridor to tho port, away from current or future residential areas. This relocation will also minimise environmental and social impacts caused by transporting increased freight throughout the city"
