BIOTECH BUDGET LEAK BUNGLE

The Shadow Minister for Industry and Technology, Bob McMullan and the Shadow Minister for Science and Resources, Martyn Evans. today said that the Government had bungled their biotechnology budget leak.

The Government today leaked that they intend to allocate $60 million in the May Budget for biotechnology.

Mr McMullan said, “We are extremely concerned that a number of senior Government Ministers had sought a greater amount of funding for biotechnology, and that the Expenditure Revue Committee, Chaired by the Prime Minister, rejected and drastically cut their proposal.

“Therefore, I assume that the relevant Government sources leaked the best parts of the budget for science and industry.

“If this is the best part of the Government’s biotechnology proposal then a number of Government Ministers have failed in their task to convince the Prime Minister of the importance of biotechnology to Australian industry in the 21st Century.

“For one of Australia’s potential important industries of the future this seems to be a dismal and disappointing outcome.”

Mr Evans said, “I fear that this, so called, extra money, may be funded through cuts to science and research and development in other areas.

“To ensure that this is not the case the Government should release the Science and Technology Budget statement at the same time as the Federal Budget - not a number of days after it.

“The biotechnology revolution is too big an issue for the Government to ignore or to use to make cheap political points.”
