The first stage of development of the new Darwin suburb of Lyons has been officially launched today at a sod turning ceremony attended by the Federal Member for Solomon, Mr David Tollner.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, Senator Sandy MacDonald also attended the ceremony.

Mr Tollner said the Lyons development would house Australian Defence Force families who are an important part of our community in the Darwin area.

“The Lyons Development is a joint venture between the Defence Housing Authority and Canberra Investment Corporation. The new suburb of Lyons will include a total of 700 news residential allotments”.

“About 300 new homes will be built to accommodate Defence families and the remaining blocks will be made available to the community via a ballot system.”

“This is an important day for the community of Darwin, especially in terms of the development which has been designed with input from local people” Mr Tollner said.

Extensively landscaped parklands and a neighbourhood centre along with provision for a child care facility for the new suburb is expected to be operational by June 2007.

The Lyons development will provide many opportunities for local businesses by creating employment and utilising local materials and subcontractors.

“At least 30 jobs will be created on-site through construction activities, with significant flow-on for off-site jobs through the manufacturing of construction components, and maintenance requirements for equipment,” Mr Tollner said.

BMD Pty Ltd has won the $8.5 million contract to manage civil works for the first phase of the Lyons development which will deliver 339 housing lots.
