The Nationals Member for Mallee, John Forrest, today announced from Canberra that the township of Kerang would receive $91,333 from the Australian Government to reduce the impact of flooding.

Australian Government funding will be matched by the Victorian Government and forms part of a total pool of $9.6 million that will be allocated nationally under the Regional Flood Mitigation Programme in 2006-07.

Mr Forrest said the funding would enable work to be undertaken on the levee bank running from Collins Road to the Murray Valley Highway, essential for the protection of the Kerang township.

“Kerang has experienced a number of floods over the years, and each has taken its toll on the levee,” Mr Forrest said. “The section identified as needing immediate attention has displayed seepage, cracking and slumping.

“This funding will provide for the construction, repair and upgrade of the levee in line with projected maximum flood heights,” he said.

Mayor of Gannawarra Shire Council, Cr Lui Basile welcomed the funding announcement. “A detailed study of the serviceability of the levee has been completed and those residents, businesses and organisations in close proximity to the works will be consulted prior to any construction activities,” said Cr Basile.

“Once complete, these works will not only ensure the safety of the residents of Kerang, they will also do much to reduce disruption of essential services during times of flood,” Mr Forrest said.

From 1 July 2007, the Regional Flood Mitigation Programme will be incorporated into the Natural Disaster Mitigation Programme which identifies and addresses natural disaster risk priorities across the nation. Funds are available for a range of measures that contribute to safer, sustainable communities better able to withstand the effects of natural disasters.

The programme is delivered through partnerships between all levels of government, with the Australian Government generally contributing up to one-third of approved project costs and state and territory governments and local agencies meeting the balance.
