SENATOR RACHEL SIEWERT

Health Inequality needs to be addressed now

Senator Siewert, 11th December 2006

Senator Rachel Siewert welcomed the call by 37 community health and social justice organisations for health equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, in an open letter published in The Australian today.

“These organisations support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Tom Calma’s plan to achieve health equality within a generation,” Senator Rachel Siewert said.

“The clear message that is coming through is the failure of Government to provide leadership and resources. We are calling on them to immediately address the issue and to invest an additional $500 million per year,” said Senator Siewert.

“This money needs to be invested now so this inequality can be addressed.”

Mr Calma’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Report for 2004‐05 identified priority areas for increased funding across the board to raise Indigenous people out of poverty in Australia.

“Since then all we’ve seen from this Government is an attack on land rights and the mismanagement of measures to deal with petrol sniffing.”
