Submissions on AusLink Now Online

A43/2003 20th May 2003

The Federal Government has today made public the hundreds of submissions to the consultation on AusLink - the national land transport plan.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson, said there was overwhelming support for the AusLink concept in submissions from a wide range of players including businesses, communities, and governments.

“Clearly there has been a very positive response, particularly to the Commonwealth leading the first long-term strategic approach to national land transport planning and funding,” Mr Anderson said. “There was recognition of the value of a comprehensive and integrated national land transport plan that will allow us to keep pace with technological, demographic and economic changes.

“Submissions also welcomed the greater opportunities AusLink offers communities, the transport industry and other levels of government to participate in planning and implementing the national transport network.

“There was wide support for greater private sector investment in land transport infrastructure projects. Potential investors and financial institutions commented that the greater certainty in infrastructure planning provided by AusLink could increase private sector investment.”

Mr Anderson said making the submissions publicly available online was an important part of an open consultation phase.

“AusLink will be a major overhaul to the way we plan and fund land transport, so it’s not surprising to find some strong views on the way various groups would like us to do that.

“Many of these points deserve proper consideration and we are doing that in the process of preparing the White Paper. Having said that, the Commonwealth will keep its focus firmly on the important strategic goals of planning and funding land transport effectively to meet the national interest.

“The Government’s final position on the various issues raised will be announced in the White Paper to be released later this year.”
