With both Prime Minister John Howard and Opposition Leader Mark Latham committing to an $8 million upgrade of the St George Illawarra Dragons Rugby League Club's “beloved” Kogarah Oval, where does this leave the Dragon’s alternative home ground at Wollongong’s WIN Entertainment Centre and the venue’s long overdue upgrade?

“Latham and Howard’s bipartisan support for the upgrade of Kogarah Oval leaves Wollongong very much in the lurch," Michael Organ said.

"This electioneering pork barrelling could jeopardise the future viability of Dragon’s games being held at the WIN Entertainment Centre.”

“WIN Entertainment Centre needs an immediate injection of funds to ensure its ongoing economic viability. Plans have been drawn up for an expansion - all that is needed is a commitment from government, to make it happen.”

“Mr Latham and Mr Howard’s election spending spree could have the unfortunate result of ensuring that Dragon home games return to Kogarah in the future severing Illawarra’s connection with St George. This is not what we want."

“Allocation of federal funds to sports facilities should be based on merit. WIN Entertainment Centre merits such an allocation”, Michael Organ said.
