Illegal boatpeople

More suspected illegal entrants have arrived at Christmas Island, Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator Amanda Vanstone, announced today.

The boat, carrying 228 suspected illegal entrants plus three crew was spotted off the Island yesterday and arrived late in the day.

The human cargo includes 33 women and 63 children.

Another suspicious vessel has been sighted off Christmas Island. No further details are yet available.

The Customs vessel, Botany Bay, is also shadowing another vessel, believed to be carrying 35 people, north of Ashmore Reef. That vessel is outside Australian waters at present and will be intercepted as soon as it enters Australian waters.

Arrangements are being made to bring the suspected illegal entrants at Christmas Island to the mainland, where they will be processed by officials from Immigration.
