Howard Should Press Bush on Global Fairness

Mr Howard should press President Bush when he comes to Australia in October to set up a new Marshall Plan to close the gap between the haves and have nots on the planet, said Greens Senator Bob Brown.

"George W. Bush is the world's most powerful man getting some of the world's worst advice. As a Christian he will innately understand sharing.

"If even a fraction of the trillion dollars spent each year on armaments - almost half of it by the US - were diverted to ensuring everyone had a clean water supply, sanitation, a school and health clinic the world would be a much safer place.

"The US was magnanimous in reconstructing Europe so why not now give a helping hand to the whole world in which billions of people survive on less than $3 a day", Senator Brown said.
