MEDIA RELEASE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS ALEXANDER DOWNER

FA059 21 May 2006

Australia welcomes New Iraqi Government

I congratulate Iraq and Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki on the formation of the new Government. This momentous event is a triumph of democracy over the forces of terrorism and violence. It is an expression of the wish of the overwhelming majority of Iraqis who voted in the December 2005 elections, in the face of extreme intimidation, for a united and democratic future.

The establishment of this Government of national unity is a key turning point in Iraq’s history and I commend Iraq’s political and community leaders for their courage and support for Prime Minister Al-Maliki and the democratic process.

The new Iraqi Government faces many challenges but the Australian Government will stand firm in its support for Iraq. The international community must continue to do all it can to assist Iraq and Prime Minister Al-Maliki’s Government.
