Greens Applaud Anvil Hill Judge's Climate Change: Federal Move to Implement Judgement

Senator Brown, 27th November 2006

The Greens have applauded the NSW court decision that the Anvil Hill coal mine cannot proceed unless there is a comprehensive greenhouse emission assessment.

"The Greens will immediately move in the federal parliament to implement the judgement. We will insert a "greenhouse trigger" amendment into the government's environment bill to be debated later this week. It means the national Minister for the Environment will have to assess all projects, like Anvil Hill, which pollute the atmosphere," Greens Senator Christine Milne said in Canberra.

Labor today joined with the Coalition to vote down a motion from Senator Bob Brown, supporting Newcastle City Council's recommendation for a cap on coal exports.

"It is a shame that federal Labor is not as forward thinking as its councillors in Newcastle," Senator Brown said.
