Federal Member for Bass Michael Ferguson today paid tribute to the Legerwood township for its innovative war memorial.

The local community today marked the completion of its memorial wood carvings.

"The Australian Government provided $10,000 for the project as part of my three-year plan for the North East," Mr Ferguson said.

"The funding has allowed the two larger trees to be carved into multiple carvings. As well as preserving the memories of fallen soldiers, the tree carvings also serve as a novel tourist drawcard for the Legerwood and Ringarooma area."

Mr Ferguson said the project has shown how a communtiy has dealt with what could have been a sad situation.

"Instead of pulling the ailing trees down, the community decided to create something from the trunks," he said.

"It's a fantastic example to other communities who might be faced with the same situations."
