Campaign Hits Half Way Mark: Bartlett calls for more focus on Indigenous issues

Queensland Democrat Senator Andrew Bartlett says he is disappointed that issues affecting Indigenous people have barely rated a mention from the two leaders during the first half of the election campaign.

“Just before the election was announced, there was talk of Mr Howard making an historic shift with his suggestion of recognising the unique status of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people in our Constitution. But as soon as the election got underway, Indigenous people and issues have become all but invisible again,” Senator Bartlett said.

“The Democrats deliberately started our campaign in Queensland with a major focus on Indigenous issues because we believe it is an issue of fundamental importance to the future of our nation.

“We call on all other parties to use the second half of the campaign to give focus and priority to Indigenous issues,” Senator Bartlett concluded.
