NSW Nationals Senator Sandy Macdonald today announced that the University of New England (UNE) will receive $1.2 million in funding for the construction of a new Club House and Amenities Block at the university’s Armidale campus.

The Australian Government will contribute to this important initiative under Round 2 of the Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) Transition Fund for Sporting and Recreational Facilities.

“UNE is one of Australia’s premier regional universities and it is pleasing to see the Australian Coalition Government contributing to its future,” Senator Macdonald said.

The funding will enable the construction of a clubhouse and amenities block at the Bellevue rugby field at UNE, incorporating players’ change rooms, officials’ change room, public toilets, canteen facilities and a storeroom.

“This facility will allow the university and the community to host a range of competitions and promote sport across the region,” he said.

The VSU Transition Fund was introduced to assist universities adjust to the changed funding environment by facilitating a shift from reliance on compulsory fees for sporting and recreational facilities to other mechanisms, including partnerships with the community; working with local businesses; and fee for service arrangements.

A total of 25 projects have been approved nationwide, contributing a further $30 million to the higher education sector for better student facilities.

“Additionally, the Coalition Government has this week announced funding of $3.5 million through the Capital Development Pool which will go towards the Rural Medical School,” he said.
