Fresh approaches to helping women return to work

Today, Deputy Labor Leader and Shadow Minister for Social Inclusion, Julia Gillard delivered a mountain load of professional women’s clothing, generously donated by residents of the Federal electorate of Lalor, to Fitted for Work.

Fitted for Work is a not-for-profit organisation that was created in July 2005 to fill a gap in employment and training services for disadvantaged and unemployed women.

Fitted for Work assists women with business clothing, presentation and interview skills at the critical period, once they have completed job training and are looking for a job.

In partnership with referral agencies, Fitted for Work currently assists more than 100 women a month, including many single mothers trying to re-enter the workforce.

Today, Shadow Minister for Social Inclusion, Julia Gillard met with some of the dedicated staff and volunteers of Fitted for Work in Melbourne’s CBD to hand over the donations received from local Lalor residents and hear about how the Fitted for Work model operates.

“I commend the valuable role Fitted for Work plays in assisting disadvantaged women get back into the workforce, helping to build self-confidence and assist women in attaining self-sufficiency and financial independence.

“My office has been overwhelmed with donations from generous residents of the Lalor electorate and I am delighted to be able to deliver this mountain of clothing on their behalf today.

“Social Inclusion is about ensuring people aren’t left on the margins of society. Labor will work with the non-profit sector to help people enter or re-enter the workforce. This initiative certainly helps women to re-engage through participation in the workforce.”
